Where Did All The Fish Go?, an inter-disciplinary unit, focused on the disappearance of fisheries. All students in grades 5-8 read World Without Fish, a cautionary story of the depletion of our oceans, and researched a fish species found in the Gulf of Maine. Students also met with many experts to learn about fish species that supported island economies. Photos from both the North Haven and Vinalhaven Historical Societies told the story of rich fishing grounds of the past. Students also learned about the history of fishing and conservation efforts of PERC from Ted Ames and Carla Guenther. A visit to a nearby fish ladder gave students some insight into work being done to ensure the return of alewives. Students set up and monitored a fyke net to see if restorations of smelt are working, and participated in reintroduction efforts with Claire Enterline from the DMR.
