NHA&E is very excited to offer a family boatbuilding workshop this summer in the Red Barn. This is an amazing opportunity for four families or small groups of friends to work together and build a boat. Each skiff is crafted from a kit made and customized by Clint Chase himself. The Echo Bay Dory Skiff is a popular style for plywood and epoxy construction and can be used as a rower or for sailing (sailing kit add-on available). The class will encompass two weekends in July (28 – 29) and August (4 – 5) with the launchings take place on Sunday, August 5th. The base price per family is $975 and includes all materials for basic construction and is limited to 4 families.

Clint Chase is a master boatbuilder and teacher. His home base is Portland at Clint Chase Boatbuilder LLC and he has taught boatbuilding and done workshops in various venues around the country. This is an amazing opportunity to work together as a family to create a lasting treasure.

The Echo Bay Dory Skiff (EBDS) and Caravelle kits are plywood hard chine “screw-and-glue” construction for epoxy. The EBDS was designed with the following in mind:

A classic dory skiff for plywood-epoxy construction

Primary uses include rowing and sailing with a sprit rig.

Easy, easy, easy: easy on budget, easy to build, easy to row, and easy to cartop.

The EBDS is used exclusively by CCBB at the Family Boatbuilding event each year at the Wooden Boat Show.

Originally designed for rough water fun, the EBDS is    highly seaworthy for its size and makes an ideal tender.

Many skiffs have a slapping noise from the bottom as they row in a chop, but the EBDS is a rare craft that Clint has rowed and not heard this sound. In fact, the boat feels like a round-bilged boat.

The boats possess the initial tenderness of a dory but have huge secondary stability. This is why they are enjoyable boats lightly loaded but have good carrying capacity for use as tenders. They use 7 1⁄2’ oars and do well with our spoon blades designed specifically for these boats.
